Falls/Germantown girls gymnastics
Behind two event wins from Paige Lemley and another win from Emma Brose, the short-handed Indians still made a day of it and won their own five-team invitational on Saturday.
"It was a nice win," Indians coach Tracy Howard said. "Watertown (which finished second) is a tough team and so we knew we would have good competition with them. The girls really came through. Vying for their own trophy really motivated them."
Falls/Germantown, which was still without one of its top performers in Aerial Holt (high ankle sprain), will be back in action Feb. 8 when it visits Grafton/Cedarburg for a Greater Metro/North Shore dual meet.
The Indians won their own invite with a 131.75 team total as Watertown had 129.5 and Port Washington 117.675.
Lemley won the vault with an 8.95 mark and also took the floor exercise with a 9.05 score. Brose claimed the balance beam with an 8.95 mark and was second in the all-around at 32.95.
The floor was a very good event for the Indians with four top six performances, including Liz Gilbert in third (8.725), Marissa Arnold in fourth (8.65) and Samantha Madrzak in sixth (8.35).
Also placing on uneven bars for the Indians were Gilbert in second (8.075), Madrzak in fifth (7.775) and Brose in sixth (7.75) while on beam, Falls/GT also got a fourth from Gilbert (8.35) and a fifth from Bria Maltby (8.2).
Howard said the meet was well attended and everyone got a big kick out of the "Olympic-style" theme that was used to honor the upcoming 2012 games in London.
Ice Bears hockey
The Ice Bears co-op, including players from Menomonee Falls and Germantown, pulled out a 4-2 win over Catholic Memorial on Friday.
With the win, the team improved to 6-13-1 overall. They took on Sheboygan on Tuesday and Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs on Wednesday and host Kenosha on Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kettle Moraine Ice Center in West Bend.
The WIAA state tournament series begins on Feb. 14.
Against Memorial, the score was tied at 1-1 after one period as Damon Nick got the goal for the co-op, with assists from Alec Thiesen and Tyler Acheson (who leads the team in total points with 28). The Ice Bears took control in the second period at 3-2 on scores from Jenny Teeters (John Kremer and Evan Rentmeester) and got a clinching, empty-net goal in the last minute of the game from Colin Dassow.
Andrew Ullmann made 29 saves in goal for the co-op.

The Warhawks earned a split last week, defeating West Bend East, 47-44, in a nonconference game on Jan. 24 before falling to state-ranked Whitefish Bay, 41-33, in a North Shore tilt Friday.
Germantown entered this week's play at 3-5 in NSC action and 4-8 overall. They took on Grafton (6-2, 9-4) on Tuesday and host Cedarburg (4-4, 7-7) on Friday.
In the loss to Bay (7-1, 13-1), the Warhawks were stymied for three quarters, falling behind 26-14 at the half and 38-20 at the end of three quarters. They put on a rally in the fourth but weren't really able to threaten the defensive-minded Blue Dukes.
Maggie Johnston had 11 points and Taylor Higginbotham eight to lead Germantown.
Against East, the Warhawks were down 37-31 going into the fourth before putting on a serious rally, as they outscored the Suns, 16-7.
Germantown was able to win the game despite having no one score more than eight points. A total of 10 players got into the scoring column as Miska Cantley had eight, and Paige Groth and Johnston seven apiece.
Menomonee Falls wrestling
The third-place Indians were just a match or two short from winning the Sheboygan South Redwing Duals on Saturday.
Falls, which will be at the Greater Metro Conference meet at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Brookfield East, turned in a 3-2 dual meet record as West Bend West won the eight-team meet.
The Indians, who were without top 182-pounder Ayoola Olapo, defeated Oconto (53-9), Greenfield (68-4) and Kenosha Tremper (40-32), but also dropped tough decisions to West (37-29) and Oshkosh North (34-31). In the loss to West, Falls lost back-to-back overtime matches at 160 and 170 pounds.
Mike Schwahn went 5-0 at 195 pounds with three pins to lead the Falls while Bill Holz at 113 pounds and Aaron Daly at 106 (two pins) also went unbeaten. Falls/Germantown/Hamilton boys swim
It was a successful senior night for the Indians, as they won every event in beating Marquette, 120-65, in a Greater Metro/Classic 8 Conference dual meet Jan. 26.
The Indians now turn their attentions to the conference meet at Waukesha South on Saturday. Diving takes place at 10 a.m. and swimming at 1:30 p.m. Arrowhead is the prohibitive favorite.
Michael Spankowski led the way for the local co-op against Marquette, with two individual wins, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.83 and also the 100 free in 52.69. Matt Ciolkosz in the 200 individual medley (2:04.97) and the 100 backstroke (59.94) did the same.
Other individual wins included Ryan Litzau in the 50 free (23.45), Ryan Thomann in diving (232.85 points), John Seiler in the 100 butterfly (57.11), Sam Green in the 500 free (5:21.89), and Paul Porter in the 100 breast stroke (1:08.49).
In addition, all three relays were victorious as Ciolkosz, Green, Seiler and Litzau in the 200 medley (1:48.15); Seiler, Green, Spankowski and Litzau in the 200 free (1:35.12); and Seiler, Spankowski, Litzau and Ciolkosz in the 400 free (3:31.5), all touched the wall first.
Coach Jim Weitzer said the parents' night festivities went well as the meet was very well attended. Marquette, which does not have a home pool, also conducted its parents' night activities at the meet.
