Falls girls send McKelvin out well, with easy win against West Allis Hale
Letter-winner graduates at semester
Menomonee Falls - Coco McKelvin won't be with the Menomonee Falls girls basketball team the rest of the season, as the ambitious senior guard went out and graduated at the semester.
And she wasn't even in uniform on Friday night for her final appearance with the Indians before she moves to Texas to live with a relative and eventually go to college there.
But she was still one of the team last week as she was made an honorary captain before Falls' impressive 54-22 win over West Allis Hale.
"We had a little ceremony for her and everybody had a good time with it," Indians coach Craig Amundson said of McKelvin, who came up through the Falls program and who was also on the varsity last season.
Falls sent out McKelvin well, as the Indians improved to 5-1 in Greater Metro play and 12-2 overall while Sussex Hamilton remained in first at 6-0 and 10-0, respectively, after a win over Brookfield Central.
The Indians will be at Central (3-3, 6-6) on Friday.
Indians take early lead
In the win over Hale (1-5, 2-10), Falls jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter lead and was up 28-10 at the half. The Indians kept their foot on the gas, outscoring the Huskies in all four quarters.
"We talked about this at halftime, of us getting out to big leads and then letting things slip a little in the second half," Amundson said, "of letting teams back into games, but we didn't do that this time. We wanted to get out and get into transition and we did that. We set a lot of base goals we like to meet for each game and I think we got almost all of them, except shooting percentage."
The Indians had 10 players score led by Rachel Defnet with 13 points while Erin Crownover had nine and Amber Bullock seven. Falls hit 16-of-26 free throws as compared to just six of 10 for Hale.
Senior post player Alex Poole was cleared for play after taking some time off for her broken nose to heal. She will have to wear a protective mask for at least a month. She didn't practice all week, but was happy to get some minutes, said Amundson, as she is one of the Indians' top scorers and rebounders.
"That'll be good to have her back," Amundson said, "because all our goals, long-term and near-term are still in place."
